There has been a remarkable shift in Dubai’s position on the global front. While the city has made rapid advancements in every sector, it has been conscious of its carbon footprint. In view of the global concern for the environment, the government has proposed several initiatives for a greener future. The city has made significant strides towards sustainability, driven by its ambitious vision for 2030, which aims to achieve its sustainability goals while balancing economic growth and environmental consciousness. 

 

Dubai’s Vision 2030 is a strategy to place Dubai as a global leader in innovation, investment, and quality of life. By 2030, the emirate aims to increase its share of renewable energy to 30% and achieve at least 30% savings in water and energy consumption. Proactive initiatives for adopting sustainable practices and nurturing a sense of environmental responsibility is fundamental in realising these sustainability goals. Here are some key trends that are shaping sustainable living in Dubai: 

 

Urban Sustainability and Environment: Sustainable development, renewable energy, and green infrastructure are pillars that play a key role in transforming the city of Dubai. Green building initiatives and certifications like LEED are becoming increasingly popular in new projects and promoting sustainable design and construction. By 2030, real estate properties will have to meet high standards of sustainability for a greener environment. From recycling and using responsibly sourced materials to implementing energy conservation systems, eco-friendly construction has become a hallmark of sustainable building practices. 


Renewable Energy: With massive investment in solar and wind power, Dubai aims to harness renewable resources and reduce its carbon footprint. Renewable energy remains at the heart of its sustainability journey with the city aiming to generate 75% of its energy from clean sources by 2050.  Large scale solar plants and wind power projects are being developed to meet the growing demand. 

 

Smart City Initiatives: By 2030, Dubai’s goal is to become a smart city by leveraging advanced technologies. The Smart Dubai Strategy will transform urban living with an emphasis on quality of life through smart technology and state-of-the-art infrastructure.

 

Waste Management: The objective is to reduce waste generation and promote recycling initiatives. Many communities are implementing waste-to-energy plants and refill management programmes. Zero waste, recycling programmes and sustainable packaging practices have garnered attention across industries. 

 

Water Conservation: Water efficient practices are encouraged in residential and commercial sectors. Desalination plants are extensively used in landscaping. Greywater harvesting and drip irrigation systems are being used to minimise the usage of water in landscaping and building maintenance. 

 

Green Spaces: Dubai is creating expansive green spaces to make the city environmentally friendly. From residential communities to commercial sectors, greenery is part of every design, accentuating the quality of life. The city’s commitment to green spaces closely aligns with the development of sustainable communities that feature solar panels, rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient systems. A larger portion of green space is reserved in communities to encourage an eco-friendly environment. The Acres is designed to achieve an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to national average, and use 33% less water.
